Protecting lives

Drinking water hygiene is the number one priority

Solutions and products for perfect drinking water hygiene

Drinking water is our most valuable foodstuff. Geberit supply systems, Geberit products and Geberit calculation programmes ensure that it retains the same quality with which it arrives at the domestic water connection all the way to every point of use. When using these products, plumbers and sanitary engineers can be confident of always making the right choice and of being in compliance with relevant norms and rules.

Hygiene pump

Long periods of stagnation of drinking water in piping systems can result in contamination with dangerous bacteria. The compact Geberit sanitary flush replenishes the potable water in the pipe system and reduces stagnation times as a result. Intelligent sensor technology helps save water, and integration in the building service management system is also possible. The sanitary flush is operated quite easily by smartphone.

For decades, Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel has proved its value in drinking water installations for sensitive areas, such as the medical and food industries. Durable and reliably sanitary drinking water installations are manufactured from the stainless steel fittings and pipes using Geberit proven save pressing technology. Right up through installation on site, all Geberit Mapress products used in drinking water systems are secured with a plug against soiling.

Geberit ProPlanner software facilitates the planning and installation of standards-compliant, hygienic, correctly dimensioned drinking water installations. Faults which may result in sanitary problems in the course of operation can thereby be avoided right from the planning phase. The comprehensive, system-oriented design of the drinking water installation provides more security, avoids expensive modernisation measures and thereby makes the installation more economical.

Legionella

Legionella are bacteria that live in the water and cause legionnaires' disease. This causes thousands of deaths every year – in Germany alone, there are as many deaths resulting from legionnaires' disease as from traffic accidents. Plumbers, sanitary engineers and building managers can significantly reduce this risk as you can only be infected by legionella if you breathe in infected water in the form of tiny droplets. This often occurs when taking a shower.

How do the germs end up in drinking water?

Drinking water is never completely germ-free. Nevertheless, the concentration of bacteria and germs is normally harmless. It is not until the germs are able to multiply that there is a serious risk. Multiplication of this type only occurs:

  • in stagnant water and
  • at temperatures of between –25 °C and 50 °C

If a drinking water installation is planned and designed properly, this can permanently prevent legionella and other germs such as pseudomonas from finding favourable living conditions.

Geberit solutions for protecting drinking water

Protection against germs: hot enough and cold enough – and always moving

Building with correct system

1

Irregular use

Fully automatic flush

Operation with smartphone

The Geberit sanitary flush prevents longer stagnation times in the drinking water pipes. Smartphone operation is simple and user-friendly.

2

Thermal insulation

Avoid lukewarm

Graphic – growth of legionella

The graphic shows the growth of legionella as a function of water temperature. With good thermal insulation, the cold water stays really cold and the hot water really hot, meaning that no bacteria can multiply.

3

Components and sanitary appliances

Only with approval

Only approved components and sanitary appliances may be connected to drinking water installations. In addition, they must be cleaned and maintained regularly.

4

Dimensioning

Precisely the right size

Mapress Stainless Steel Fittings

Pipe diameters that are dimensioned for the actual consumption rather than being too big enable optimal water replacement.

5

Everything flows

No unused pipes

Used pipe versus dead-end pipe

Water stagnates in pipe sections that are not used or used rarely. Legionella can multiply and contaminate the rest of the system. Therefore, we recommend Geberit circular pipes.

6

Cleanliness

Well-protected system components

Mapress protective cap

Pipes and fittings from Geberit are protected against dirt by their packaging.

7

Clean start

Simple and reliable

Hygiene filter

A Geberit hygiene filter prevents pipes from being contaminated with unhygienic water during their initial filling, for example during a pressure test with water.

8

Storage water heater

Too hot for germs

Graphic – growth of legionella

The graphic shows the growth of legionella as a function of water temperature. The storage water heater must be set so that water is heated up to at least 60 °C. Germ growth is at its peak at temperatures between 25 °C and 50 °C.

9

Extinguishing water pipe

No chance of backflow

Extinguishing water pipe

The water in extinguishing water pipes stagnates over the years. Therefore, a technical measure is required to prevent backflow into the drinking water system.
