Legionella are bacteria that live in the water and cause legionnaires' disease. This causes thousands of deaths every year – in Germany alone, there are as many deaths resulting from legionnaires' disease as from traffic accidents. Plumbers, sanitary engineers and building managers can significantly reduce this risk as you can only be infected by legionella if you breathe in infected water in the form of tiny droplets. This often occurs when taking a shower.
How do the germs end up in drinking water?
Drinking water is never completely germ-free. Nevertheless, the concentration of bacteria and germs is normally harmless. It is not until the germs are able to multiply that there is a serious risk. Multiplication of this type only occurs:
- in stagnant water and
- at temperatures of between 25 °C and 50 °C
If a drinking water installation is planned and designed properly, this can permanently prevent legionella and other germs such as pseudomonas from finding favourable living conditions.
